Born Josephine Esther Mentzer, Estée Lauder was raised in Corona, Queens, by her mother, Rose, and father, Max. The name Estée was a variation on her family nickname, Esty. Always interested in beauty, she was mentored by her chemist uncle, and began her business by selling skin care products he developed to beauty salons and hotels.
Her talent for sales led to a counter at New York City's Saks Fifth Avenue in 1948, followed by other leading department and specialty stores. In 1960, the first international account at Harrods was opened.
One of Mrs. Lauder's favourite quotes was "Tell-A-Phone, Tell-A-Graph, Tell-A-Woman", based on her belief that once a woman tried a product, she would like it and share it with her friends. Based on this conviction, she pioneered the idea of the "gift with purchase".
One of Mrs. Lauder's last public appearances was in 1991 when she visited Saks Fifth Avenue to promote her new SpellBound fragrance. Estée Lauder passed away peacefully in her Manhattan residence, aged 97.
