Alan Pan is a member of the Global Makeup Artists programme for Estée Lauder. His assignments have included working backstage at London Fashion Week and several award ceremonies, as well as doing the makeup for well-known celebrities and models.
When did you start in makeup?
1987
Where did you learn to be a makeup artist?
I started in Malaysia where I grew up. I used to be a beauty therapist and have my own salon where I hired a makeup artist to do any makeovers. However one day there was a customer booked in to have a makeover and the makeup artist didn't turn up, so I had to do it and it was at that moment that I found my vocation and I've never looked back.
What is your inspiration?
Colour - I have always loved colour so I was either going to be a painter or a makeup artist!
What's your most important tool?
The foundation brush - it gives you flawless skin which gives me the best base to work on.
What's your favourite Estée Lauder product?
Re-Nutriv skincare - I couldn't live without it!
What's your top makeup artist tip?
Colour is meant to be fun - experiment!
If you could do anyone's makeup, who would it be and why?
Just anyone woman off the street - these are the truly beautiful women to me.
What was it like being backstage at Fashion Week?
Amazing and hectic! It enabled me to extend my makeup skills in a different way and try new things.
What is your favourite thing about being an International Makeup Artist
for Estée Lauder?
for Estée Lauder?
When women come in to get their makeup done and want my advice. I can immediately see how makeup could make them look and love transforming them.
Who are your most admired makeup artists?
Kevyn Aucoin - he was self taught and an absolute genius.
Who are you most respected designers?
Dolce & Gabanna - how could you not love them?
What is your makeup style?
My style changes according to the season - especially after a holiday. On holiday I always get inspired about how to use and apply makeup.
