BREAST CANCER
FACTS & FIGURES

Worldwide, breast cancer is the most prevalent cancer in the world today and it is the most common cause of cancer-related deaths among women. According to the World Health Organisation, more than 1.2 million people worldwide will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year. The good news is that mortality rates are declining in all women and this is believed to be the result of early detection and more effective treatments.

In the U.K., it is estimated that 43,700 women and 300 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer each year (Breast Cancer Care data 1995 to 2004) and that 172,000 women alive in the UK have been diagnosed with breast cancer in the last 10 years. One in nine women in the U.K. and 1 in 12 women in the Republic of Ireland will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. However, breast cancer is being detected earlier today, treatment is starting sooner and the rate of survival is increasing - in fact, earlier diagnosis has led to a 20% fall in breast cancer mortality rates between 1995 - 2004 in the U.K.
